Exclusive: Paying for frontier AI models buys 4-month head start at 5x the cost

A report from Mozilla indicates that the performance advantage of expensive proprietary AI models over cheaper open-source alternatives has narrowed to a lead of roughly four months. While frontier models remain slightly ahead in capability, they currently cost approximately five times more than the open models rapidly closing the gap.
