Satellites show Earth lost more than 12 trillion tons of ice from Greenland, Antarctica in 47 years
Satellite data reveals that Greenland and Antarctica have lost more than 12 trillion tons of ice over the last 47 years as global warming accelerates the melting process. Approximately five-sixths of this loss is driven by warmer ocean waters eroding the ice sheets from beneath and the sides rather than surface melting alone.
A warming Earth is accelerating the melting of the planet’s two major ice sheets, with five-sixths of the melt coming from warmer waters eating away at the ice sheets from below and the sides.
