The Department of Justice has charged 17 individuals with stealing $1.3 million in Social Security benefits. The cases include a woman accused of concealing her mother's death to continue collecting payments.
“The Social Security Administration’s benefits programs are meant to safeguard America’s elderly and most vulnerable — not to bankroll fraudsters,” said the DOJ’s fraud division lead, Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald.
