Today in History: September 16, the Land Run of 1883
On September 16, 1893, an estimated 100,000 settlers participated in the Land Run of the Cherokee Outlet, the largest event of its kind in United States history. Participants raced to claim 6 million acres of land in northern Oklahoma that had previously been designated as territory for the Cherokee Nation. The massive influx of people significantly expedited the settlement of the Oklahoma Territory and remains a landmark moment in the expansion of the American West.
