NY scraps high school Regents exam graduation requirement starting in 2028
New York is eliminating the requirement for high school students to pass Regents exams in order to graduate, a policy change that will take effect in 2028. The current 12th-grade class remains the last required to pass exams in core subjects including math, English, science, and Global Studies. This shift follows a state-led effort to modernize graduation standards and provide alternative pathways to earning a diploma.
Current 12th graders will be the last graduating class required to pass at least four Regents exams in math, English, science and Global Studies.
