Letter: Energy self-sufficiency is not a new idea in isles
A reader highlights a 1977 article discussing Hawaii's potential for energy self-sufficiency through geothermal, solar, and wind power to reduce reliance on imported oil.
I came across a Honolulu Star-Bulletin article from Jan. 27, 1977, by A.A. “Bud” Smyser concerning energy self-sufficiency for the state of Hawaii. In an interview with then-University of Hawaii Dean of Engineering John W. Shupe, the idea is presented that Hawaii can produce its own energy by using geothermal, solar, wind, agricultural assets, presenting a financial benefit to the state by not having to buy oil. The thesis might have been a response to the oil embargo of the 1970s.
