Editorial: Why Americans need a free press
Almost at the very birth of this nation, the founders were clear they wanted citizens to have free access to information about their government. In 1735, the British government sued in New York to stop published criticism, a libel case that the defendant journalist won. The protection of the journalists from government interference with their coverage is central to the First Amendment of the Constitution.
